"some illegal immigrants believe if they are successful in reaching the uk, it is difficult for the uk to return them to their country of origin." organised criminals are committing massive computer-based frauds using "malicious software" to steal details of credit cards and bank accounts, pins, and other financial data. the gangsters use crooked solicitors and accountants to launder vast amounts of "dirty money" in property deals or "underground banking". to keep one step ahead of the law, the crime barons seek to corrupt police and other law enforcement officials as well as central government employees. they often switch crimes to avoid a clampdown by police or customs. hitmen are hired to murder rivals or gang members suspected of double-crossing or becoming police informers. soca says that organised gangsters are predominantly involved in two types of immigration crime - people-smuggling and human trafficking. human traffickers trick or force victims - many of them women and children - to travel. they often end up as prostitutes or slaves. women are sold for between £2,000 and £3,000. the report says: "the scale of people-smuggling far exceeds that of human trafficking. but the continuing exploitation of trafficking victims and frequent use of violence and intimidation makes the latter the more acute threat. serious organised criminals exploit illegal immigrants to the uk as cheap, casual labour, using violence, intimidation and debt bondage. "organised illegal working has spread throughout the uk and is seen particularly in the horticulture, agriculture, care, construction, hospitality and food-processing sectors." the report also reveals britain is a major market for class-a drugs, with between 35 and 45 tonnes of cocaine and 25 and 35 tonnes of heroin imported every year. apart from greed, the common theme among organised crime gangs is violence. the report says: "some are willing to commit or sponsor kidnapping, serious attacks and murder to protect their interests." most criminals favour hand guns, and there is an increasing demand for automatic assault rifles. the old-fashioned weapon of choice - the sawn-off shotgun - is on the decline. the report reveals that major crime gangs are cashing in on the trade in forged and stolen documents to allow legitimate immigrants to remain in the uk after short-term visas expire. forged student documents - including fake college acceptances - and bogus marriages are also big crime business. hundreds of illegal immigrants are reaching britain in lorries because a machine that detects heartbeats is switched off at night at the belgian port of ostend, it emerged yesterday. and when it is switched on it doesn't work properly.
